Whale & Dolphin Watching in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka sits beside some of the deepest water any whale-watching coast can offer, and we sail it from two sides of the island on opposite seasons — so there's almost always a boat going out somewhere. Off Mirissa in the south the drop-off sits closer to shore than almost anywhere blue whales gather; off Nilaveli in the east it's fin whales and big pods of spinner dolphins off Trincomalee. We go out when the animals are there, not on a fixed schedule — early starts, when the sea is calmest and the whales are feeding. Blue whales and fin whales offshore, spinner, spotted and bottlenose dolphins closer in, most mornings on the way out. Nothing wild is ever guaranteed, but in season these are some of the most reliable whale grounds in the world.
Trips run three hours or so. Most are shared, booked by the person; off Nilaveli you can also take a private charter and keep the deck to your own group. Young children are welcome, though the early start and the swell can be a lot for under-5s.
Mirissa
1 November – 10 AprilSouth coast. Blue whales feed where the drop-off swings in close to shore, with spinner dolphins most mornings on the way out — some of the most accessible blue-whale watching in the world.
Nilaveli
30 April – 15 OctoberEast coast, off Trincomalee. Fin whales offshore and big pods of spinner dolphins closer in, on a season that runs opposite to the south.

Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales — the largest animal on Earth. You can also regularly spot fin whales, the second largest animal on Earth, and pilot whales. Spinner dolphins, spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins are frequently seen throughout the season. Sperm whales, Bryde's whales and orcas are rare but possible.

Nilaveli is particularly known for fin whales — the second largest animal on Earth — and pilot whales. Spinner dolphins, spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins are seen regularly. Blue whales, sperm whales, Bryde's whales and orcas are rare but possible.

They run on opposite seasons, so there's almost always one in season. Mirissa, on the south coast, is world-famous for blue whale sightings — some of the most accessible in the world. Nilaveli, on the east coast near Trincomalee, is quieter and one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spot fin whales. Tell us your dates and we'll point you to whichever coast is running.
For whale and dolphin watching there's no strict minimum, though we generally recommend 5+ as the trip starts early and can last up to 3 hours — young children can be prone to seasickness.
