Whale & Dolphin Watching, Mirissa, Mirissa Collective

Whale & Dolphin Watching

Blue whales feed in the deep water just off Mirissa, and here the drop-off sits closer to shore than almost anywhere else they gather. We pick you up at around 05:30, the boat leaves the harbour at 06:00, and spinner dolphins are out most mornings on the way.

Sri Lanka is one of the best places on earth to see blue whales, the largest animal that has ever lived. Off Mirissa the deep water comes close to shore, and blue whales and fin whales are the main sightings; off Nilaveli it's fin whales and big pods of spinner dolphins. Early start, open water, and dolphins riding the bow on many mornings. Sightings are never guaranteed by anyone honest, but the odds here are genuinely good, especially in peak months. You go out with an experienced local crew who know these waters.
